Tips to Avoid Gnats in Your Home

Gnats are tiny, but they can be a huge annoyance, especially when you see like a thousand of them flying inside your home. That’s one reason why they are considered ‘pests’. What are gnats anyway? These are little two-winged insects that resemble mosquitoes. They usually fly in large numbers. Some bite while others do not. While a majority of them won’t really harm you, still, they could be a nuisance.

But the question is, how can you eliminate them? Here are excellent tips for doing so:

Find What Is Attracting Them

The very first step that you should take is to determine what’s attracting these insects inside your house. In general, they are into sweet and fruity scents. But there are also some types that are attracted to water, body heat, sweat, the scent of pets, light, and other stuff.

Carefully inspect your house and see if there is anything rotten. You will most likely find something in your trash, especially rotten fruits and vegetables, that are attracting the attention of gnats.

The bottom line is, look for the breeding ground and eliminate it.

Use Apple Cider Vinegar

Even if you have eliminated the thing that has attracted a swarm of gnats, those little insects may still remain inside your house. With this, you can utilize apple cider vinegar to get rid of them.

What you need to do is add two tablespoons of vinegar to half a cup of water as well as a few drops of liquid dishwashing soap. Place the mixture in a container or bowl and position it to where the gnats are. Because of the sweet scent, they will be tempted to get into it. And once they do, they would get trapped.

Keep Your Food

If you have leftover food, it is highly recommended that you keep it in the fridge or a container with a lid. Never leave your food out as this is another thing that can attract those annoying insects. Make sure to wash your dishes as soon as you are done eating, too, because leaving them in the sink will only draw gnats. Take note that even the smallest amount of food or drink will invite a thousand gnats. So make it a habit to do your dishes promptly.
